A detox headache is never fun.
They can be dull, steady aches, or splitting, stabbing pains. And while they cause discomfort, they are a good sign.
A detox headache is a withdrawal symptom which occurs as your body becomes flooded with toxins on their way out. When the body is detoxing, cells and tissues begin to expel toxic ingredients stored inside them. These toxins enter the blood stream and temporarily overload the body with poison.
A detox headache can last 1 to 7 days during a cleanse.
A detox headache is one symptom or consequence of this temporary increase in toxins. While it is different for everyone, in general, the duration of the detox headache will depend on a couple of factors. The first factor is how toxic your body is and the types of toxins, whether they be caffeine detox effects or detox effects from alcohol, preservatives, narcotics, or prescription meds, etc.
The second factor is how efficiently your body is eliminating toxins. The good news is that, in many ways, you have control over how well your body expels toxins during a cleanse. There are certain things you can do to make sure that toxins are flushed out of your system as quickly as possible.
One of the things you can do to move toxins out of the body is to make sure to drink plenty of water. Water with a fresh lemon slice will be even better at delivering cleansing fluids and antioxidants. While cleansing, you need water more than ever, and you may even need to increase your water intake slightly.
You will also help your body cleanse by opening your pores in a variety of ways. Hot showers are wonderful for relieving a detox headache and other symptoms, because they open the pores and let toxins out of the skin to be washed away. While cleansing, two or three hot showers a day may be needed to relax the muscles and release toxic substances, but only during the first two to three days.
Saunas are also very helpful, although, you should be prepared, since they can cause symptoms such as dizziness, and can result in a flush that may lead to a rash. At all times, but especially during a cleanse, when you use a sauna get out frequently to rinse away sweat and toxins.
While a detox headache is extremely unpleasant, they are actually a good sign.
The detox headache signals that your body is releasing toxins and trying to eliminate them. Your job is to respect the process and aid it as much as possible by cleansing the skin and drinking plenty of fresh water.
One other piece of advice when it comes to a detox headache is to get plenty of rest. Your body will certainly need extra time for sleep and relaxation. Don’t overdo it, and try to avoid taking painkillers for relief from symptoms.
Riding out your detox headache may not be easy, but it will certainly be rewarding. When you are toxin-free, you will get sick less often, look better and have more energy. A detox headache may be terribly unpleasant, but it is a small price to pay for a healthier life!
Headache is one of the most common signs of detox during a cleanse.
The number one concern when doing a detox cleanse is,“What side effects will I experience?" It is important to know that there are normal symptoms during a detox cleanse. Knowing these are a normal part of detoxification will help to alleviate worry. Anything outside of these symptoms may be a sign that a different reaction is happening in response to the ingredient used. Often, detox symptoms are heightened during a cleanse because most people also choose to eat better and eliminate some bad habits like drinking alcohol, consuming sugar and eliminating coffee at the same time.
Signs You Are Detoxing
A dull, prolonged headache is one of the most common detoxification side effects. Headaches during detox are most common in the afternoon and evening, as the body has been active all day. One reason this happens is because you have altered your normal daily routine and most likely ditched some bad habits such as drinking alcohol, caffeine, smoking or cutting out sugars or processed foods, etc. This creates a situation of withdrawal, which can cause a headache, as your body is no longer receiving these.
Second, you will find you will need to urinate more frequently and perhaps experience loose stools, both of which can be dehydrating to the body. Dehydration will cause a headache. It is imperative to drink a lot of water, that being a minimum of 8-10 full glasses of filtered water daily.
2. Fatigue & Disrupted Sleep Patterns
Stimulating the body to purge toxins requires a larger internal workload than the body is used to. This creates fatigue and sometimes disrupted sleep. Expect to feel more tired and respond to the feeling by resting more than you normally do. Take naps when you can and get to bed at the very latest by 10pm. Go to bed with a plan to get a full 8 hours of sleep a night. When you are sleeping, your body is able to work efficiently at repairing and cleansing itself. Scheduling more rest that you are used to will help ensure you are getting enough down time, so that if sleep is disturbed you are still getting in enough rest.
Adding any additional tasks may cause the fatigue to be worse. Stick to a moderate exercise routine, don’t overdo it. Increasing your workload is not beneficial to the workload required of your body during detoxification. Stress in any form, whether physical, emotional or mental is counterproductive.
3. Frequent urination, Loose stools & Digestive upset
As discussed already, urination and loose stools are some ways the body eliminates toxins. Some of the herbs in a cleanse may be slightly diuretic, which stimulate the body to urinate and have a bowel movement.
It can be a shock to the digestive system to introduce herbs, nutrients, more fresh, whole foods, while eliminating processed foods and bad habits. The stimulation of purging toxins and excess hormones also stimulate more frequent digestion and the body works hard to get rid of the bad stuff.
This is why hydration and eating a nutrient rich whole foods diet is so important. These will help ensure you are replenishing nutrients. A great way to support your digestion while doing a cleanse is to drink fresh vegetable juice and smoothies rich in pea isolate protein, and to make sure you are taking your probiotic daily.
When choosing to do a cleanse it is important to eliminate poor dietary and lifestyle habits such as drinking alcohol, coffee, processed sugary foods and perhaps smoking. Eliminating stress is also an important part of cleansing. Changing diet and lifestyle practices can create a situation of temporary withdrawal. This will most definitely trigger cravings associated to those areas you have changed and eliminated. For example, if you drank coffee every morning, it makes sense that your body, being used to that, will desire it once again.

Signs and Symptoms You May be Detoxing Too Quickly
Sometimes the body tries to expel toxins faster than they can be properly eliminated. When this happens, more serious symptoms may appear. These are a warning of caution by your body to slow down and change what you are currently doing. Make sure your health coach is aware of any unusual symptoms. These symptoms include rash, flu-like symptoms and very rarely vomiting. Any of these symptoms may also be a sign of a reaction to one of the ingredients in the cleanse.
Here Are 10 Reasons Why You May Want To Quit Coffee
The caffeine in coffee increases catecholamines, your stress hormones. The stress response elicits cortisol and increases insulin. Insulin increases inflammation, and this makes you feel lousy. Inflammation is also linked to many diseases.
Habituation to caffeine decreases insulin sensitivity, making it difficult for your cells to respond appropriately to blood sugar. High blood sugar levels lead to arterial deterioration and increased risk of mortality related to cardiovascular disease.
Unfiltered coffee has the highest amount of beneficial antioxidants yet also leaks the most diterpenes into your system. These diterpenes have been linked to higher levels of triglycerides, LDL and VLDL levels.
The helpful chlorogenic acids that may delay glucose absorption in the intestine have also been shown to increase homocysteine levels -- an indicator for increased risk of cardiovascular disease, which tends to be elevated in diabesity.
The acidity of coffee is associated with digestive discomfort, indigestion, heart burn, GERD and dysbiosis (imbalances in your gut flora).

Associative addictions trend with coffee -- who doesn't immediately think of warm, frothy sweet cream and sugar when they picture coffee? Surely the business of coffee has inspired a culture addicted to the sugary, fatty tastes of what has become more of a meal than a drink! That morning latte is the epitome of food lacking nutrition density yet packing energy!
5-HIA, an organic acid and component of the neurotransmitter serotonin (the happy chemical) seen in the urine tends to be elevated in coffee drinkers, which means they may be at risk for lower levels of serotonin synthesis in the brain. Serotonin is necessary for normal sleep, bowel function, mood, and energy levels. It is a vicious cycle, as caffeine can disrupt sleep and promote anxiety and depression. We all know someone who tends to be tired, wired and over-caffeinated!
Elevated urinary excretion of important minerals such as calcium, magnesium and potassium have been noted in coffee drinkers. An imbalance in your electrolyte status can lead to serious systemic complications.
Constituents in coffee can interfere with normal drug metabolism and detoxification in the liver, making it difficult to regulate the normal detoxification process in the liver. Another issue to be aware of with coffee intake is how certain medications such as levothyroxine (thyroid) as well as tricyclic antidepressants are poorly absorbed, making symptoms curiously worse for patients.
It's a wise experiment to provide yourself a break from coffee intake and see what it feels like to live your life on your own fuel. Remove coffee and caffeine safely from your system and see how authentically energized you feel!
How to Avoid Withdrawal Symptoms
Those who consume the most caffeine, alcohol and sugar, and those who have the highest toxic load, tend to have the most difficulty initially. In any event, symptoms of withdrawal usually disappear after three or four days. It is best to slowly reduce your intake of caffeine and coffee.
Make sure you drink at least six to eight glasses of filtered water daily. Instead of coffee in the morning, take some warm water with freshly-squeezed lemon juice.
The best water to drink is water that has been passed through a filtering process. Common and inexpensive filters are available, such as carbon filters like the ones Brita makes. The best filter is a reverse osmosis filter that puts the water through a multi-step process to remove microbes, pesticides, metals, and other toxins. This can be installed under the sink. It's a great filtering system and cheaper over the long run. Avoid water in plastic bottles, which contains phthalates, a toxic petrochemical. Mineral water or still water in glass bottles is also acceptable.
To prevent headaches, make sure your bowel movements are regular.
If you are tired, allow more time for sleep.
Take 1,000 mg buffered vitamin C with breakfast and dinner.
Make sure you exercise daily to help fight off fatigue. Even simple walking is good -- 30 minutes daily.
Some people rely on substituting coffee for real food. When you are hungry make sure to eat and do not let your blood sugar get low. Have some protein in the afternoon such as a handful of nuts or seeds like almonds, pecans, walnuts, or pumpkin seeds, cooked beans, or a piece of steamed or baked fish.
Take a sauna or heat therapy in a bath.
Practice pressing the pause button. Withdrawal can be stressful and research has shown that meditation and other mindful activities can help calm an overstimulated and stressed system while boosting the immune system.
Keep a journal and track your symptoms. Note the difference in quality of energy you experience while off of coffee.
Consider a complete elimination program and avoid all refined sugars, flours, caffeine, alcohol, dairy, gluten and any other addictive substance. By allowing certain triggers to stay in the diet the body stays on the vicious cycle of cravings and addictive behavior. Reset your biology by eliminating all these dietary triggers for inflammation and fatigue.
I know this is a difficult goal, but I assure you that your body and mind will thank you. The sense of calm, clarity and restful sleep will reward you with the simple pleasures of innate health and an energy that is rightfully yours.

Milk Thistle is unique in its ability to protect the liver.
Milk thistle acts in a similar fashion to detoxify other synthetic chemicals that find their way into our bodies, from acetaminophen and alcohol to heavy metals and radiation.
Milk thistle was approved in 1986 as a treatment for liver disease and it is widely used to treat alcoholic hepatitis, alcoholic fatty liver, cirrhosis, liver poisening and viral hepatitis.
The active ingredient, or liver-protecting compound in milk thistle is known as silymarin. Can BCAAs help me gain muscle, change my body composition, and recover faster?
The answer is a simple, "YES!"
There are three BCAAs. Leucine, isoleucine and valine. They are part of our 8 essential amino acids, which are essential to eat because our body can’t make them. You’ll find all 3 together in meat, fish, poultry, and dairy foods.
Amino acids are important for a variety of functions in our body. They are the building blocks of proteins, form coenzymes (coenzymes are essential for enzyme activity; enzymes facilitate biochemical reactions in the body) and serve as precursors for the synthesis of molecules in the body. And as an athlete, BCAAs serve additional functions. They can help you build muscle, recover faster and prevent muscle damage.
Maximizing Strength Gains
BCAAs are essential for preventing muscle breakdown in the recovery period post-workout and they can also flip the switch in favor of muscle growth. After a hardcore workout where you are busting through your lifting routine, two processes increase: muscle growth and muscle breakdown. However, if you don’t eat something, muscle breakdown exceeds muscle growth.
In addition to boosting muscle growth, BCAAs can decrease the muscle damage and soreness associated with intense exercise. Less damage means an athlete will recovery rapidly and get out on the court, field or in the gym sooner.
BCAAs may also decrease muscle damage during endurance exercise as well as the loss of lean body mass and power experienced during prolonged exhaustive exercise (bouts of exercise lasting several hours if not over the course of days like a bike ride across your state). Many athletes train hard for prolonged periods of time during which, it may be difficult to ingest adequate calories to sustain the same pace. Over time, calorie deficits lead to weight loss, which is fine if you have the spare fat to lose, but, during weight loss, some of that weight is typically muscle tissue. BCAAs can help decrease the amount of muscle lost when you’re dieting.
Boosting Weight Loss
In addition to helping boost muscle growth, some scientists think that BCAAs can help you drop fat by increasing satiety (that full feeling where you push the plate away). This effect may be especially important when on a low calorie/carb diet. In one interesting study, scientists put wrestlers into one of three groups. All 3 groups were on low calorie diets while one group served as a control, another was given BCAAs and the third group was given a high protein diet. The group supplemented with BCAAs lost a significant amount of bodyweight and body fat compared to the other groups.
BCAA supplementation certainly isn’t necessary for the masses. However, athletes who train hard, want to gain muscle, change their body composition (lose fat) or recovery more rapidly, may find that BCAAs help them achieve their goals.

Seeing that it’s now Fall and many of you haven't started your new years resolutions, especially around the arena of FOOD, I thought I would help you out with the WHY around doing a detox.
As many of you have heard me say, we aren’t plants, we don’t photosynthesize, and that we have to consume things from the outside world.
We are also omnivores, which means we have to consume a variety of things to make our vessel, our body work OPTIMALLY.
And the super cool thing about being an omnivore is that we have CHOICE, and yet, the super CHALLENGING thing about being an omnivore is that we have…well, CHOICE.
And if you put garbage in, you’ll get garbage out. When you set your body up with the right information (food, air, water and love) ONLY health, vibrancy and joy can show up.
So what to do when life has gotten so full of fast, quick and easy foods and mindset?
When you have become so numb to what you’re putting in your mouth, or so confused by it and you know there’s a better way but are intimidated as to the “how.”
The next few paragraphs explain the WHY and the IMPORTANCE of doing a GENTLE detox to allow YOU to start paying attention to how foods that you are choosing are affecting your body and mind.
The program that I use is through Arbonne International, it’s my favorite by far, and if you’re familiar awesome. If not, it’s still worth the read because I talk about the WHY.

Arbonne found me in 2010.
Their 30 days to fit program was launched in 2011 when I was still a brand new consultant. And to be honest I was skeptical. Not only about the formulations, but skeptical about the whole DETOX mentality. Many of us when we hear DETOX we think extremes, we think starving, we think olive oil, cayenne pepper and lemon juice.
That’s not at all what I discovered that day with Arbonne. The philosophy around the 30 days to fit was to do a few things:
1. focus on whole foods eating
2. focus on avoiding inflammatory, triggering and addictive foods like gluten dairy soy sugar alcohol and caffeine
3. focusing on the importance of absorbing our foods…as Arbonne so beautifully put, we aren’t what we eat we are what we absorb
4. helping the organs that allow our bodies to detox –the lungs, the GI/liver, the skin and the kidneys.
We use the analogy of a bathtub that I was taught in Dental Hygiene School
Ok, so imagine your body as a bathtub and the drains are the organs of elimination: the kidneys, the liver and gastrointestinal system, your skin and your lungs, and when you turn the faucet on you’re adding THINGS like water, food, air, thoughts, and things you’re putting on your skin…all of this is stuff the body has to SORT THROUGH and THEN hold on to what it needs to build your body and then LET GO of the things that’s not serving the body to be as healthy as it can.
And just for the sake of argument I’m going to make a sweeping generalization and say that MOST people’s DRAINS, or DOORS or ORGANS OF ELIMINATION in Western societies are not functioning optimally.
So then what happens to the drains?
Right, they get clogged.
And then toxicity builds up in the body.
And then we experience symptoms.
To name a few:
PMS, weight gain, headaches, migraines, osteopenia, joint pain, thinning of nails and hair, hormone imbalance…the list goes on.
And then if we keep doing what we’re doing we will keep getting what we are getting. So the toxicity continues to build up. And then the body says, “I have to DO something with this,” and where does the body NOT want to put toxins?
Right, in the VITAL organs like your heart, liver and brain. They are called vital for a reason.
So the body came up with a brilliant plan. It said, “lets create an inert place that we can keep the toxins away from the organs. Hmmmmm, I know! Lets stick it in adipose tissue.”
Fat is like bubble wrap for toxins. And again, if we keep doing what we are doing we will keep getting what we’re getting and the toxins/or fat cells will keep BUILDING.
And simultaneously wreaking havoc on the hormone system and then eventually, the vital organs.
And we will then most likely end up with a diagnosis.
So what to do when we get caught in this?Before Arbonne came into my life and the 30 day plan, I was SEEING this pattern in my dental patients. And I was advising them to avoid the foods that were triggering inflammation, fat storage and disease and decay.
But I was finding that when I would look at a single mother of 3 and tell her to avoid gluten and dairy and soy and sugar, she would look at me with that look of NO WAY THAT’S IMPOSSIBLE. It was like I pulled the rug out.
Arbonne is the rug.
